Assignment: Writing a Revision Plan

For this assignment, you will revisit a previous essay and put the revision and editing skills you’ve learned into practice. You won’t submit the rewritten essay;  you will only submit a “revision plan.” Follow these steps in four numbered paragraphs for your revision plan:

  1. Select an essay (or other writing) you’ve previously written. In the revision plan, describe the writing you’ve chosen. Try to pick something that is long enough to give you something to write about in your revision plan!
  2. Then, read it over carefully. Even when writing is good, it could always be better. Look for issues in content, clarity, organization, and minor errors. In your revision plan’s second paragraph, write about what changes you would make to improve the overall structure and effectiveness of your writing.
  3. In the third paragraph, describe how you would edit your essay for grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and word choice.
  4. In the fourth and final paragraph, write a brief reflection on the revisions and edits you made and their impact. Explain why you would made specific changes and how they will enhance your essay. How will they improve your writing? How would those improvements help your readers?
  5. Submit your revision plan below. If it is longer than 250 words (one page), attach it as a PDF or DOC file, written in MLA format.

Remember that revision and editing are iterative processes, so don’t expect perfection in one go. Each round of revision and editing brings you closer to a polished and refined piece of writing.
